Farewell and Thanks to Phillipp Schofield

The Social History Society extends its warm thanks to Professor Phillipp Schofield, outgoing President of the Economic History Society, for his outstanding service as the Economic History Society representative on the Social History Society Committee.

Since the foundation of the Social History Society, the two Societies have instituted reciprocal representatives. Phillipp, a long serving member of the Social History Society’s Book Prize Committee, decided to undertake this representative role soon after his election as President of his Society, in order to have a close view of the working of another learned society.

Philipp thus assisted our Society during a period of great change, as we faced the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, administrative changes, and negotiations for a new journal contract that also required us to review our funding model. Phillipp has been an engaged and very generous observer on our Committee and contributed to several sub-committees.

Professor Naomi Tadmor, Chair of the Social History Society, said:

“We greatly benefited from his experience and advice.’

We are also pleased to welcome Professor Patrick Wallis, the new President of the Economic History Society, as Philipp’s successor on our Committee. We look forward to working with him and continuing the strong relationship between our societies.
